Course Abstract:

This course will introduce issues related to end-of-life care, including the contemporary experience of dying in America, standard care settings, and patient values at the end of life. This course introduces topics related to end-of-life care, including how and where people die, the role of allied health professionals and the application of ethical principles in end-of-life situations, and the issues of grief, spirituality and the "good death."

Learner Outcomes-

After this course participants will be able to:

• Explain key concepts of ethical principles relating to dying patients.
  
• Describe issues related to providing quality end-of-life care.
• Identify goals of care for the dying patient.
• Describe the spiritual, psychological, social, and physical aspects of dying.

About Dr. Stead

Amanda Stead, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, CHSE is an Associate Professor and the Coordinator of Simulation Education in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Pacific University. It is her personal goal to educate students and the community about the critical role speech-language pathologists play in the care of patients with dementia and in end-of-life care. In addition to teaching a course in progressive illness and dementia, Dr. Stead teaches graduate SLP courses in geriatrics, counseling, and aphasia and teaches numerous other allied health professional students in end-of-life care at Pacific University. Additionally, she has trained thousands of SLPs through continuing education events in best practices related to serving patients near the end of life. She has received honors for her teaching from the Oregon Speech- Language and Hearing Association (2013), Pacific University (2019), and the American Speech- Language and Hearing Association (2022). Her research examines the pedagogy that best prepares future clinicians for work with geriatric patients and the development of high-quality healthcare simulations.
