Incorporating Diversity Science into your Practice

Course Description:
This two-part course (September 11th and October 9th) is designed to introduce diversity science and cultural humility within the practice of healthcare. This course focuses on (1) centering the lived experiences of multi diverse communities; (2) conceptualizing bias on various social divisions of difference as factors that impact social determinants of health; (3) developing critical self-consciousness to better understand how one’s perspectives and experiences might inform their practice; and (4) implementing strategies to address bias in healthcare settings.

To maximize your experience, this is one course, divided over two sessions. You must attend the first session in order to attend the second. There will be asynchronous work to complete between the September 11th and October 9th sessions.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this two-part course series, attendees should be able to:

  • Describe diversity science and cultural humility as well as their impact on healthcare
  • Critically analyze the implications of bias on health care
  • Utilize tools to address and cope with bias in the healthcare setting
  • Apply and reflect on communication skills in cross-cultural clinical settings
